YouTube can be an enormous and exhilarating resource, a fantastic form of entertainment and a gigantic pain in the ass at the same time. As an overview and my first gripe would have to be advertising. Not just one ad but many ads in the space of one video. Sometimes I enjoy watching a channel that has been demonetized for the joy of there being no advertising whatsoever.
maybe the best thing is the universe of music that I never knew existed. You can search an artist you like and see film clips, live versions, interviews and even documentaries. Some of these excursions can be somewhat bitter sweet because the artist is dead or the band is no longer together and damn I miss them so much. One classic example is the British drummer, Bill Bruford. I know he was in the band Yes, also in King Crimson and had many solo albums and collaborative efforts. But he retired, dammit! The one thing that gutted me wasn't so much retiring from drumming but retiring from composition. The music he wrote for his group Earthworks was just beautiful and I cannot begin to understand how he could stop.
which goes to another point. Commentators and comedians, all types of people who are no longer with us. If they were alive now, what would they think of now? A few diverse examples would be Christopher Hitchens and Jonathan Winters.
then there is the pool of videos with their baggage of agendas and biases of various political stripes. What I would give to see one video investigating the pros and cons of a given issue or point. I suppose it used to be called the news, but it is beyond me how things have become so polarized. It's not so much fake news right now - but lazy news, fused with so many poisonous affiliations.
finally there are things that defy classification that are just pure entertainment. Bad Lip Reading and The Fat Lez Show I could watch over again on high rotation.
If you have a HDMI cable of a decent length, it kind of makes you wonder what actual commercial television is for.
