I have a few thoughts about this. The Moreland Hotel is open again and has been open for a month, after being closed for such a long time. I have had a number of good times here, mainly around watching some of the greatest UFC tournaments. The weirdest one was someone was losing and a fan was so upset he spat on the TV screen. So much for the spirit of free and open competition.
when they closed, the first thought I had was it was great that the poker machines were no longer operating. Across Victoria - the sheer volume of people saving all that money can only be a good thing. Maybe the same could be said for the TAB there.
out of curiosity, I went in the other day and was confronted with my dumb phone dilemma. I don't have a smart phone so I can't scan in. All the areas look so separated and cordoned off that it looks like the place really shouldn't be open at all. Then the blatantly obvious. There is hardly anybody in there at all. The bar, the restaurant and I didn't bother with the poker machines at all. The access between the bar and the poker machines was blocked off anyway.
the paradox is that I reveled in the fact that the Retreat Hotel opened. Maybe because it felt like a sense of community had been revived. People sitting outside and the place is dog friendly. The joy of patting dogs out front was back again, along with having a friendly chat with their owners.
there are a number of pubs along Sydney Road that are still closed and I don't know how I feel about it either way - good or bad.
