the benchmark

now contrary to what you've heard or been told I have some alarming news for you. Sharks live in the water. It is, in fact, their home. It's the season again and the lazy and stupid season of shark attack reporting has started again on the news, maybe because of one reason; the weather is warmer and more people are in the water. You know, the place where sharks live? Yet words like predator in reference to sharks and prey in reference to victims are rolled out again with surreal familiarity. Maybe this style of lazy journalism could be used as a barometer or benchmark for all types of dumb reporting.

I was scanning the channels on the television the other night and that bastion of objective reporting, The Project, even had a go. You know the program, whose logo is the news reported differently, yet they spewed out the same nonsense  using words like predator and prey like all the other news automatons.

maybe the one saving grace nowadays is they tag the suspected shark instead of hunting it down and killing it. "Let's go hunt the shark down and kill it, rip it's guts out and see if it has attacked any humans."

I wonder what it would be like if sharks could talk, confronting them with all manner of accusations in relation to the nature of their attacks and what their response would be -

"I don't know if you've noticed, but I'm a shark"
