the signs are here. Some blatant and some not so obvious. The new barber in Moreland Road has a number of them in their window. The one that stuck out the most -
Dan! Let us cut hair!
Dan! Let us cut hair!
it was barely a fortnight ago and they were doing a roaring trade.
also in the last fortnight, stores completely empty. Some of them were restaurants who gave up serving take away not all that long ago now gutted, like they never existed.
even a cursory glance along Sydney Road and you can't help but notice the empty buildings.
but also there is a brooding tension on the streets. A tension, I recently discovered, that I am not immune to. Seeing the number of people wearing masks under their chins, not exercising or riding a bike. Just walking or catching the tram. I have mentioned earlier that the virus has destroyed my ability to have an inner dialogue, a fellow passenger doing (or is it not doing?) just that.
"mate, do you breathe through your neck?"
"what?"
"do you breathe through your neck?"
"no"
"well then, put your bloody mask on!"
I think what may ease the tension is for the public to be informed as much as possible and as accurately as possible
those in charge have less than a fortnight
after that - no surprises. people have had enough.
