maybe part of this post should have a section of it's own relating to the collective nature of the masses. I think it was a Wednesday, the news and our glorious leader were pleading with the public to basically, stop hoarding
I am walking through the Barkly Street Mall once again and there is a frenetic vibe in the air. People seem to be moving about faster and erratically.
the time is about 1pm and I walk past Woolworth's. Because limits are in force, there are numbers of people at the counters with single 8 packs of toilet paper. Others looking into the store are picking up that they have some in stock and are not walking, but running into the store.
so curiosity has got the better of me so I go in and to the final aisle to see what the situation is regarding stock.there is a security guard - yes, a security guard at the start of the aisle and as I turn the corner I witness the last 8 pack being removed from the shelf. A staff member told me they got a delivery last night. So from 9am to the early afternoon an entire row of toilet paper had been purchased one 8 pack at a time.
but the thing that was truly surreal was what happened as I was walking away from the aisle. A group of approximately fifteen people had seen what I had seen from outside the store and were not walking, but running towards the aisle. With a look on their faces that gave me the feeling that they didn't care if I was in the way or not. I had a vision that they were prepared to trample me under foot if I dared prevent them from getting to their precious cargo
the security guard didn't seem like such a crazy idea after all.
but since this day one thing has occurred that has changed me in one aspect of my very nature and I don't think I'll ever get it back. The ability to suppress my inner dialogue. If I observe something that is truly insane, I no longer confine it to my thoughts but say it out loud and loud.
and as the throng were rushing past me, some bumping into me with a look of intent that was beyond terrifying, then came the words -
"please, all of you. can you stop being insane!"
